Despite the initial expectation that the 19th EU sanctions package against Russia would be implemented in September, its adoption has been postponed again, according to Trans.ru.
This time, the delays may be due to Hungary and Slovakia seeking certain concessions in exchange for not being able to veto the new restrictions. Furthermore, the postponement could be prompted by Austria's position, which is seeking to lift sanctions on the assets of Russian businessman Oleg Deripaska in order to compensate for damage to Raiffeisen Bank.
One of the key restrictions in the 19th EU sanctions package will be a phased phase-out of Russian gas imports by the end of 2026. This issue is a sensitive one for Hungary, as Budapest is seeking an exception to the EU's proposed ban on liquefied natural gas from Russia. According to an EU diplomat, Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico "may slow down negotiations on sanctions against Russia at the summit," referring to the meeting scheduled for October 23.
The unanimous support of EU states is required for the package to be adopted.
