In Latvia, cargo transshipment at the terminals of the port of Ventspils in the first three months of 2024 decreased by 25.2% compared to the same period last year to 2.3 million tons.
The portal writes about this with reference to the data of the Ministry of Transport of Latvia bb.lv , reports Delovoy Peterburg.
The largest decrease was noted in the transshipment of bulk cargoes (898 tons, which is 37.3% less than in the first quarter of 2023) and petroleum products — 45.3% less, only 735 tons.
Also, a large drop — by 36.2% — was noted in the transshipment of general cargo.
According to the volume of cargo transshipment, the port of Ventspils is the second largest port in Latvia, the publication notes.
Last year, its cargo turnover decreased by a third compared to 2022: 10.4 million tons of cargo were handled.
In general, over the past year, the cargo turnover of Latvian ports fell by 19.6% to 38.6 million tons of cargo, which the Latvian authorities explained by a change in the geopolitical situation and anti-Russian sanctions. Against the background of a general decrease in cargo turnover, the volume of grain transshipment increased by 14%.
On February 22, Latvia imposed a ban on the import of agricultural products and feed from Russia into the country, while leaving the transit of Russian grain allowed.
