Portal-based inspection systems have already been installed at 12 border crossing points along Russia’s national borders, according to the Russian Ministry of Transport. Plans are in place to install this equipment at at least 34 additional priority road border crossings.
These systems scan trucks while they are in motion. If the system detects no suspicious items or signs of irregularities, there is no need for a physical inspection of the vehicle or its cargo. This streamlines the screening process and reduces the burden on border crossing points.
According to the Ministry of Transport, this technology allows trucks to be scanned 8–10 times faster. As a result, the total screening time is steadily approaching the target of 10 minutes per vehicle.
Border crossings already equipped with these portal systems include Bugristoye, Zabaykalsk, Mashtakovo, and Kani-Kurgan. At Kani-Kurgan — as well as several other locations — infrastructure is being upgraded as part of the "Efficient Transport System" national project. Expanding the network of these systems is intended to increase the speed and efficiency of freight vehicle screening at the border, while maintaining the capability for thorough inspections whenever suspicious indicators arise.
