New government regulations will come into effect in Hungary from the beginning of 2026. These regulations are designed to redirect freight traffic from regional roads to motorways and improve safety in populated areas, according to the Transinfo.News portal.
Key changes include:
• Increased tolls for trucks. Tolls on motorways (categories J2-J5, M2-M3) will increase significantly. A similar distance-based toll system will be introduced on national roads.
• Increased penalties. Fines for unauthorized road use will increase by an average of 30%. In particular, for ignoring signs restricting or prohibiting the movement of trucks or their weight, the fine will be 100,000 forints (approximately 260 euros) instead of the previous 47,000 forints.
• Expanding weight restrictions.
These measures are aimed at diverting freight traffic to safer, four-lane expressways adapted for heavy loads, reducing congestion on local roads.
