Work on the expansion of the section of the highway near the Krasnaya Gorka border checkpoint will take place from both the Russian and Belarusian sides. This was announced by the Secretary of State of the Union State Dmitry Mezentsev, writes TASS.
"A decision has been made to organize the construction of an additional lane, both from the Belarusian and Russian sides, so that the number of lanes helps to relieve traffic flow during peak hours," he said.
According to the Secretary of State, at the meeting of the high-level group of the Council of Ministers of the Union State on June 10, the issue of competent organization of traffic at the border crossing was again considered. "We see this as one of the priorities in the work of the high-level group. I am convinced that [Deputy Prime Minister of Russia] Alexey Overchuk, [Ambassador of Belarus to Russia] Dmitry Krutoy, and interested ministries will confirm that the request of people who sometimes unreasonably waste time moving through this point is taken into account," he said.
In April, the governor of the Smolensk Region, Vasily Anokhin, announced that it was planned to open a new lane for freight transport on the section of the M-1 Belarus federal highway near the Krasnaya Gorka checkpoint on the border of the Russian Federation and Belarus, through which more than 4 thousand trucks pass every day. As the head of the region pointed out, due to the expansion of the road, traffic jams near the control point will be eliminated and the volume of road transport between the countries will increase. It will also increase the mutual flow of tourists and strengthen economic ties.
