Kazakhstan has introduced a ban on the export of sugar until the end of summer. This measure will ensure the needs of Kazakhstanis in sugar for the coming summer, reports Bizmedia.kz .
At a meeting of the Interdepartmental Commission on May 6, under the leadership of Deputy Prime Minister Serik Zhumangarin, they discussed providing the domestic market with sugar until the new sugar beet harvest. Currently, about 256 thousand tons of sugar are available in warehouses and through imports in Kazakhstan, which is half of the annual demand (500-550 thousand tons).
"Now there are 136 thousand tons of sugar and raw cane in warehouses. Taking into account the quota for the import of Russian sugar (120 thousand tons until August 31, 2024), the total volume is about 256 thousand tons. There is also a quota for duty-free import of 300 thousand tons of raw cane until the end of 2024. The average monthly consumption is 46 thousand tons, in summer – up to 60 thousand tons. There are enough reserves until the new harvest," said Vice Minister Yerbol Taszhurekov.
In the near future, Kazakhstan intends to discuss with Russia an increase in the quota for Russian sugar by 100 thousand tons by the end of the year.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs also decided to temporarily ban sugar exports to third countries, including the EAEU, until August 31, 2024, with the exception of international transit.
