The construction of a large waiting area near the Kozlovichi checkpoint on the Belarusian-Polish border is planned to be completed by the end of 2025. Such information was made during a working meeting with the participation of Valery Vakulchik, Assistant to the President – Inspector for the Brest region, BelTA reports.
Periodically, due to the irregular work of the Polish side, trucks that are waiting to leave for the European Union accumulate on the M1 highway. Closer to the end of the year, there will be an influx of transport, the number of overloads will increase. This is a standard situation in November-December, when suppliers strive to fulfill their obligations on orders on time. The task is to work out the optimal solution to minimize queues, create safer conditions, and provide a number of other points for the convenience of heavy truck drivers.
"We are doing this so that, first of all, it would be good for people – both Belarusians and guests of the Republic of Belarus," Valery Vakulchik stressed. The meeting was attended by representatives of the Brest Regional Executive Committee, Brest City Executive Committee, Brest District Executive Committee, customs, border service, transport inspection, and law enforcement agencies.
Kozlovichi is the largest cargo terminal both in our country and one of the largest in the post–Soviet space. The main traffic of cargo vehicles passes through the checkpoint. "It is planned next year to complete the construction of the waiting area (the largest in the territory of the Republic of Belarus) near the Kozlovichi checkpoint. Up to 1,000 vehicles can be accommodated there. When this waiting area is operational, the problematic issue will go away," said Sergey Yakuta, head of the Brest Customs.
To reduce queues, it is proposed to use additional platforms with parking spaces near the existing waiting area. They are ready to be provided by transport and logistics companies, where it will be possible to register in the waiting area for crossing the border. Drivers will also have an option for self-registration.
"In fact, what is being offered does not require additional financial costs. These are all organizational issues. Additional work has already been done to prepare the conditions for the successful implementation of these plans," the Presidential aide noted. – Thus, there will be no queues, it will be convenient for people. I put the car in - please go to the hotel, cafe, Brest fortress, to the store, and a lot of places."
The construction of a waiting area near Kozlovichi began earlier this year. "The construction is divided into several stages. Now the first stage is coming to an end - filling with a sand mixture. More than 400 thousand tons of sand have already been imported. A small amount is planned, then tamping, and at the beginning of next year – the creation of necessary communications, engineering structures," added Sergey Yakuta. In the waiting area, in addition to parking for cars, conditions will be created for food, recreation and leisure for drivers, and buildings will be built to repair vehicles.
