The government of the Russian Federation plans to introduce a temporary ban on gasoline exports for six months from March 1, 2024, in order to offset the growth in demand in the spring and summer periods. Another measure may be to increase the standard for diesel sales on the stock exchange to 16%, a representative of Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak told TASS.
"We confirm the information," the agency's interlocutor said, commenting on earlier publications with reference to a source. The plans to introduce a temporary ban were reported by TASS and the press service of the Cabinet of Ministers.
The decision to ban exports is necessary to compensate for the growth in demand during the summer holidays and field work, as well as during scheduled refinery repairs. The restriction will not be extended to the EAEU countries, as well as South Ossetia, Abkhazia, Mongolia and Uzbekistan.
The ban on gasoline exports was in effect in 2023 from September 21 to November 17 to stabilize the price situation in the domestic motor fuel market. The decision to lift the ban was made after the domestic market was saturated with fuel and a supply surplus was created.
At that time, the Ministry of Energy of the Russian Federation did not rule out the return of the ban on the export of motor gasoline, if necessary.
Since September 21, 2023, Russia has also banned the export of summer diesel fuel due to the need to saturate the domestic market. The ban was lifted on November 22.
