Cargo turnover between the Arkhangelsk Region and China along the Northern Sea Route continues to grow. By the end of the year, it had quadrupled. This applies to the products of the timber industry, the Press Center of the Government of the Arkhangelsk region reports.
This year, it was possible to increase the share of exports of timber products from the Arkhangelsk region to China by sea. The department is drowning, if we take statistical data for the last five years, then in general, cargo turnover along the Northern Sea Route during this period amounted to almost 26 million tons.
According to the press center of the regional government, exporters are now provided with an alternative opportunity to transport goods through the main shipping route of the Russian Arctic. The Northern Sea Route is the shortest sea route to Asian countries: in comparison with the passage along the Southern Sea Route through the Suez Canal, it is 30 percent shorter, and the delivery time is only 22 days.
– In 2023, the Arkhangelsk Region turned another page in the history of the development of port infrastructure and maritime cargo transportation, – said Alexander Tsybulsky, Governor of the Arkhangelsk Region.
In autumn, a direct flight started from Arkhangelsk to Shanghai along the Northern Sea Route – the first in the last 10 years, the department says. Already in 2023, the turnover of LPC products between Pomerania and China has quadrupled compared to two years ago, and this is just the beginning.
"The government support measures taken following the visit of the President of the Russian Federation to the Arkhangelsk Region in February helped to establish uninterrupted supplies of timber products," the head of the region added.
Alexander Tsybulsky called the approval by the Government of the Russian Federation of a comprehensive development plan for the Arkhangelsk transport hub another important decision in the field of cargo transportation.
– Thanks to this, we will modernize the infrastructure and increase the cargo turnover of the seaport, as well as build a deep–water area with a maximum allowable draft of 14.5 meters and year-round navigation, - said the head of Pomerania.
The implementation of the planned plans will also increase the capacity of the main terminal complexes and the capabilities of stevedoring companies.
