Since January 1, 2024, changes have been introduced in the mileage determination system in Belgium, according to the Association of International Automobile Carriers.
The report says that in Flanders, the tariff for 686 km of roads will increase from zero to the usual tariff. A preferential rate of 0 cents/km will be provided to zero-emission vehicles (ZEV) on the entire Flanders road network. However, OBU remains mandatory for ZEV. In the Brussels-Capital Region and Wallonia (Sofico), ZEV electric vehicles will continue to be classified as EURO VI emissions.
In Wallonia (Sofico structuring network), mileage rates will be indexed. In Flanders and the Brussels-capital region, the indexation will take place on July 1, the agency informs.
From the first of January 2024, the use of an on-board TriBoxAir device from the Eurotoll service provider on Belgian roads will be prohibited. The Eurotoll service provider has already informed its customers. Customers of this service provider who have not yet received the message or have not yet replaced their TriBoxAir are invited to contact Eurotoll.
The software of the activated OBUS (on-board devices) of the six service providers accredited to determine mileage in Belgium will be automatically updated to reflect the new tariffs and network, effective January 1. The six interested service providers are Axxès, Satellic, Telepass, Toll4Europe, TotalEnergies Marketing Services and W.A.G. Payment Solutions, AMAP writes.
The amount charged per kilometer on toll roads depends on three factors: the region in which the road is located, the total permissible mass and the European vehicle emission standard. The mileage fee applies to three categories of total permissible weight (from 3.5 tons to 12 tons, from 12 tons to 32 tons and more than 32 tons) and seven Euro standards (from the most polluting Euro 0 standard to the most environmentally friendly Euro 6 standard). The higher the European standard of the car and the lower its gross weight, the more profitable the fare per kilometer.
